All about our Zero-Waste items!

One of our goals this year is to increase our zero-waste & sustainability line.  Because every small change, made by each individual, adds up to a whole lot, and it certainly counts.
Here’s a little bit about the products we currently carry:

 bamboo toothbrush homemade toothpaste recipe

Our bamboo toothbrushes contribute to zero plastic waste and cost the same as a standard plastic toothbrush.

This five star review from one of our customers says it all:

“It's a nice, natural handcrafted toothbrush. Does a great job cleaning your teeth as long as you don't press too hard. Cleans better than standard toothbrushes. The handle feels good in your hand. Recommend leaving it out until dry to keep the water from absorbing into the wood. Better for the environment. It will biodegrade significantly faster than plastic. Thank you for selling this great product!”

Did you know you can also easily make your own homemade toothpaste?  It’s not only plastic-free (toothpaste tubes are made from plastic and aluminum combined and can’t be recycled), it’s also free from many of the contaminates found in most toothpastes (including  triclosan, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate SLS, colorants and many other things you don’t want to be putting in your mouth!).

Here’s a simple recipe:

3 Tbsp. Coconut Oil

1.5 Tbsp. Baking Soda

2-3 drops of our essential oil. We recommend peppermint in you like the minty freshness, or clove, tea-tree or sage oil for their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Optional Ingredients: Xylitol (if you prefer your toothpaste have a sweeter taste, its also good for your teeth),  or Bentonite Clay for great cleansing action.

Mix all together very well, keep in air-tight jar, use within a week (lasts up to 4 weeks in the fridge).

Use a dry stick, spoon or other clean utensil to put the toothpaste on your brush to avoid getting water or bacteria into your paste.

2) Loofah

natural loofah sponge

Did you know that Loofah is a natural plant product that is biodegradable? It can be used in many ways - from an excellent skin exfoliate, to a biodegradable sponge option. From bath to dishes, we've got you covered.  It beats any foot scrubber, can be washed and reused, cut down to preferred size, and put in the compost when it's run its course.

sisal loofah soap saver bag

Our sisal soap pouches are made from natural fiber.  Just put your soap inside the bag, lather up and wash.  The sisal acts as a gentle exfoliant, while saving your soap and making it last much longer.  Just hang it up with the soap inside, to dry between uses.

This is a great alternative for people who are used to using liquid soap on a plastic “loofah” – not only is natural soap much better for your skin, but think about all the plastic bottles and non-biodegradable poof sponges you won’t be throwing in the landfill!

shampoo bar

These shampoo bars (great for almost all hair types) lather like crazy and last as long, if not longer, than a bottle of shampoo.  Not only is it better for your hair - there are no sulfates, parabens, dyes or synthetic fragrances - it is better for the environment! Think of all the plastic bottles you'll save from landfills and all the toxic run-off that won't be running down your drain.  Your hair is going to love it too!

beeswax food wraps made in the usa zero waste

Last but certainly not least product for this post - our beloved Beeswax Wraps, the cutest alternative to plastic wrap.

We make them by hand, with cotton fabric and a food-safe natural beeswax blend, which coats the fabric to make it adhere to itself or something else.  They are washable (please read care instructions carefully), reusable and compostable after years of use.  They work great for sandwiches, or to cover a pot or bowl for easy refrigeration storage.

We plan to add more products over the next several months (think bamboo dish sponges and our homemade dish soap blocks (yes!), just to name a couple).
